about

This score was composed originally for the 2012 Wheaton Drama Playhouse 111 production of It's a Wonderful Life: The Radio Show. The show had such great success, that they brought it back for the 2013 holiday season for a single weekend. They chose to use the score and jingles I had composed for the previous production again this year. In the madness of the holiday season with family obligations, holiday productions, and end of the year work commitments, I did not have an opportunity to listen to the score in its entirety with the wonderful performances of Tony Palermo's script until production week. That night, I was quickly reconnected to the magic of the wonderful production and humbled to have the opportunity to be a part of it again.

The score excerpts you hear are written in the style of the script which is a radio show set in the 1940's performing a production of "It's a Wonderful Life." The music had to have the illusion that a small house band with clarinet, piano, upright bass, drums, and some strings were hiding just off to the right on the next sound stage. In reality, there was to be no orchestra but just me and my keyboard or a live pianist. The director also wanted to stay true to Frank Capra's story and arrangement style, so the challenge I faced was to write and record something with those attributes and my spin. The score also had to have a very minimal sound so as to not compete with the actors reading copy simultaneously. Eight of the twenty-six cuts from the score highlighted here hopefully accomplished those goals. The last two tracks are instrumental samples of the jingles written for actual businesses who purchased ads during the live performances. I had a ton of fun putting the score together with the director and singers. So, please enjoy and Happy Holidays! Kathleen
