This was an effect for theatrical sake. This is the never-seen character of Ernie rehearsing his piano part for the upcoming dance associated with the town's picnic. It stops abruptly because he is just practicing. As any other pianists will tell you, sometimes the music, your fingers, or that fly that keeps darting into your face makes you just stop to curse. That is what I was imagining here.
