When I read Picnic, I instantly heard that the music needed to be representative of all characters and should have a very small town, USA feel. I wanted to make this a prevailing theme throughout the show that was representative of these lives nestled within a deceptively complex time period. However, the director also did not want to have the music strictly come across as belonging to the forties or fifties. So, the challenge was to create a mosaic of instruments with an anchored theme to be reprised throughout the show.
