Skyfront Property
Lyrics and Music by Kathleen Dooley
2016
All we need is our backyard
A couple of easy chairs faced west
You and me, a warm breeze, a cool drink
And let’s forget about the rest
Don’t you think that’s best?
We don’t need some fancy canopy
We don’t need a boat on a lake
We might need a new bag of charcoal
You grab the dogs, I’ll give the grill a scrape
And just let the quiet take
‘cause we’ve got Skyfront Property
Where the best views are free
We’ll share our Skyfront Property
The sunset, the breeze, you and me.
This life has had a few turns
Things don’t always go as we thought
We might’ve had a misstep or two
We might’ve taken for granted all we’ve got
Dwelling on things that we had not
Maybe it was the noise of the crowd
Maybe it was the rush of the pace
Maybe all these years we lost
Made us stop and take a look around this place
And then I recognized your face
Under our Skyfront Property
Where the best views are free
We’ll share our Skyfront Property
The sunset, the breeze, you and me.
Yes, we’ve got Skyfront Property
Where the best views are free
We’ll share our Skyfront Property
The sunset, the breeze, you and me.
Oh, the sunset, the breeze, you and me.

James and Maryann
Lyrics and Music by Kathleen Dooley
2016
He walked into the yard
A new school, a new place
A brave third-grader, the new kid named Jim
She passed the crossing guard with a kind smile and grace
And he knew right there Maryann should be with him
That time as he looked back
Their love was like an attack
Crashing like thunder before a storm’s great span
Soon the magic of a kiss
That wonderful bliss
Began the story of the love of James and Maryann
For her, school ended fast
Tenth grade, she barely passed
As a new mom, Maryann grew awful quick
Jim married her that fall
Worked the mill to provide all
Their new grown-up lives felt like a cruel trick
But that time as he looked back
Feeling always under attack
Working hard each day, doin’ the best they can
Soon the trouble they’d go through
Tested everything they knew
In the the story of the love of James and Maryann
Jim spends sunset in the yard
With the last year being so hard
He finds comfort when he imagines sitting with her
The kids come everyday
And the grand kids laugh and play
Filling the house with joy, but it’s not the way they were
And now when he looks back
The love is still in tact
With its ups and downs like a brilliant grand plan
The magic of that kiss
He’s so grateful he never missed
The beginning of the love of James and Maryann
The magic of that kiss
He’s so grateful he never missed
The story of the love of James and Maryann

Sunday Services
Music and Lyrics by Kathleen Dooley
2015
A vibration in the room, he swore he could feel it
A buzzing in his fingers once strings touched them
And the ladies began to dance
And the men started to pant
At the joyful noise he made
Soon Brother Mike picked up his guitar (and the choir sang along)
Sister Jer picked up her tambourine
Miss Sherry brought it home with a beat on the conga drums
And the rest of the room jumped to its feet
Dancin’ and stompin’ to the beat
And it’s another Sunday Service
Grab your tambourine and join the band
The Fine Reverend John; Sister Margaret leading on
And the spirit moves ‘cross the land
He played his solo as if his feet would leave the ground
You’d swore you’d seen him floating ever higher
It was if his back would break if he made another sound
And it set the congregation on fire
And the spirit jumped ever higher (higher, higher)
And it’s another Sunday Service
Grab your tambourine and join the band
The Fine Reverend John; Sister Margaret leading on
And the spirit moves ‘cross the land
Come on and join the band
And it’s another Sunday Service
Grab your tambourine and join the band
The Fine Reverend John; Sister Margaret leading on
And the spirit moves ‘cross the land
Come on and join the band
Come on and join the band

Winter
Lyrics and Music by Kathleen Dooley
2006
The cold winter wind has come through again
And it doesn’t show signs of blowin’ by
And that cold winter ache
I can’t seem to shake
Leaves me silent as I wait for the summer sky
My dear north wind, you cruel friend
You find me as if you know
That this summer I’ve found is fleeting
For breaking through is the cold
I see others down along the sandy dune
One I used to know the way, now can’t recall
For when you live among the frozen trees
You only memory is that of the Fall.
Sweet winter breeze, would you consider please
To pass me by, just this one time
For my heart won’t let go though my mind awaits
Your hello, and my goodbye.
Sweet winter breeze, would you consider please
To pass me by, just this one time
For my heart won’t let go though my mind awaits
Your hello, and my goodbye.
Your hello, and my goodbye.

Getaway
Lyrics by Robin K. Dunning, Music by Kathleen Dooley
2003
Can we get away for a day or two?
I just want to spend some time with you
Where we can talk
And take a walk or two
Just passing the time with you.
Can I tell you this alone?
All my worries, and may I say once again
So that when our adventure ends
I’ll be alright, my friend
Because of the time well spent
So, any road you choose
Anything you wanna do
Just let our hearts be loose
For a day or two
Sometimes it’s hard to be alone
A wonder if I’ll ever find my way down this long road
But then you help me to rest my load
And point me again toward home
By reminding me of places I’ve known
So, any road you choose
Anything you wanna do
Just let our hearts be loose
For a day or two
So, any road you choose
Anything you wanna do
Just let our hearts be loose
For a day or two

Maybe (from the Riverfront Playhouse Production of Picnic)
Music and Lyrics by Kathleen Dooley
2011
Maybe the sunlight was brighter that night
Maybe the moon was just closer in sight
Maybe your arms that held me so tight to your heart
I never wanted to open my eyes
I only wanted to breathe in your sighs
You held me fast and made something in me start
The music pulled you so close to me, I remember
And when we kissed I wished that it would last forever
Maybe the sunlight will take you away
Maybe we just won’t be able to say,
“Don’t let me go, and please, my darling, stay.”
Maybe the sunlight will take you away
Maybe we just won’t be able to say,
“Don’t let me go, and please, my darling, stay.”

Back Achin’ Blues
Lyrics and Music by Kathleen Dooley
2016
I wanna run with you baby
But my old bones won’t let me try
I wanna run with you baby
But my old bones won’t let me try
If you keep running that way,
My sad heart will tell you goodbye.
The way you dance
You’ve got a style
There was a time I’d keep up for a while
I wanna run with you baby
But my old bones won’t let me try
I wanna run with you baby
But my old bones won’t let me try
If you keep running that way,
My sad heart will tell you goodbye.
You shout a good line
You deserve so much more
But I don’t think you understand what hard work is for
I wanna run with you baby
But my old bones won’t let me try
I wanna run with you baby
But my old bones won’t let me try
If you keep running that way,
My sad heart will tell you goodbye.
Your fist to the sky
Shouting “Rights due at birth”
But I don’t think you get how much a uniform is worth

Carbondale Dream
Music and Lyrics by Kathleen Dooley
The wind blows hot tonight in this cold town
A baby cries as a stranger walks on by
And you wonder if life is ever up or always down
Then you wonder why
Sometimes I don’t think this heart will ever bleed
And I wonder if you could know
Would it surprise you to know that I need
Or would you just turn to go?
But the wind blows soft along the plains
The sun beats down, another day remains,
And the night shows its glimmering eyes; into a dream we fall
But what’s the meaning to it all? To it all?
And if you told me that you’d always be there
Should you be someone I believe?
Just because you love me does not mean that you care.
It’s always just so easy to deceive me.
But the wind blows soft along the plains
The sun beats down, another day remains,
And the night shows its glimmering eyes; into a dream we fall
But what’s the meaning to it all? To it all?

Nothing
Music and Lyrics by Kathleen Dooley
He never saw it coming.
Will he ever know
How long she thought of leaving
And how much it took her to go?
But it really doesn’t matter anymore
What started it this time
With nothing, she’ll still walk through that door
Feeling so sure
She’s left nothing behind.
She turned into something
That you wouldn’t recognize
The strength and will that she once had
Were long ago compromised
But it really doesn’t matter anymore
What started it this time
With nothing, she’ll still walk through that door
Feeling so sure
She’s left nothing behind.
She’s looked down that road, not knowin’ where it leads
She looked at herself, seein’ all that she’d need
For a moment, she thought of stayin’
But she’s got nothing left to give
So she’ll take only what’s in her heart
And once again learn to live
But it really doesn’t matter anymore
What started it this time
With nothing, she’ll still walk through that door
Feeling so sure
She’s left nothing behind.

Lies
Music and Lyrics by Kathleen Dooley
2016
One last sip
One last glass
One last bottle and one more foot onto this road
I can make it down alone
My body will find its way back home.
This one is for sleep
This one is to wake
This one with water at that moment you begin to break
It will bring you right back down
And make you so much more pleasant to be around
The little lies we tell ourselves don’t hide the truth away
We’re very good at playing straight
But it gets harder everyday
Just a little more
I’m almost to the end
I just can’t leave until I finish
It’s all on me
The sacrifice will pay and make amends
When I’m dead, I can sleep in the end.
The little lies we tell ourselves don’t hide the truth away
We’re very good at playing straight
But it gets harder everyday
It’s getting harder, harder everyday
It’s just so hard
Just a little more…

Your Way
Music and Lyrics by Kathleen Dooley (with a serious nod and great respect for Paul Anka)
2016
It’s getting late
We have to finish this
And so I break down again
It was always so easy for you to just let it go
And easier for you to pretend
The end is near
You’re right on that so far
But how could we simply walk away?
We were two halves of the same whole
But now you’re going your own way
I saw the charts you used to flee
I knew the man you wanted to be
But what you chewed up
And what you spit out
Wasn’t anything but me
And now you say it’s amusing to you
As one who never dropped to your knees
But did you notice as you stood so tall
The fool who only wanted to please?
I saw the charts you used to flee
I and always knew the man you wanted to be
But what you chewed up
And what you spit out
Wasn’t anything but me
And yes, oh, yes…

Sing Off Key
Lyrics and Music by Kathleen Dooley
2016
I can feel that you’re ailing
I can see you think it’s never gonna change
And all this time it’s felt like failing
Soon you’ll see that tomorrow’s another day
Not too long ago I lived there
I was everything that he thought I should be
And I worked so hard just to not care
Every time he turned to someone else but me
Then I threw away that anklet that I’d never wear
I went and got a bob instead of keepin’ that long hair
I sang some songs off key
I wrote a new melody
And somewhere along the way,
I found me
So when you think that you can take no more
Remember just how strong that you can be
Just turn around and slam that door
Take those steps you need to set your heart free
Just like I threw away that anklet that I’d never wear
I went and got a bob instead of keepin’ that long hair
I sang some songs off key
I wrote a new melody
And somewhere along the way,
I found me
So sing some songs off key
Write new melodies
Pound a new beat along the way…
